Years Locked In

In a historic commitment, we have secured contracts with Hilcorp and Harvest Midstream with terms extending 20+ years. We are the first utility to find a long-term, definitive solution to Cook Inlet gas supply concerns, and are the first to source natural gas from the North Slope to benefit other regions of Alaska.

North Slope Gas Supply

The abundance of natural gas reserves on the North Slope far surpass demand levels with approximately 40 trillion cubic feet in Prudhoe Bay and Point Thompson alone. To put this into perspective, during oil extraction 8.9 billion cubic feet of natural gas is reinserted daily. The current annual usage of Interior Gas Utility is 1.3 billion cubic feet.

Local Storage

IGU has several local storage facilities. Our largest facility is in Fairbanks. It stands 84 feet high, 100 feet in diameter, and has a 5.25 million gallon capacity. We have a 150,000 gallon storage facility in North Pole with expansion possibility. We even supply natural gas to Talkeetna Lodge!

We’ve Thought of Everything

IGU assures a secure gas supply through contracts and contingency plans. Currently, we source all our natural gas from the Cook Inlet. We plan to move to the North Slope in 2024.  Both supply contracts are backed by reliable transportation agreements and daily deliveries. Once we move to the North Slope, we will keep our Cook Inlet liquefaction facility in warm status, ready to pitch in should it become necessary. Lastly, should the need arise, we have strategic relationships with Cryopeak-LNG solutions and other Canadian LNG companies to ensure security under any circumstance.
