Report a Natural Gas Leak
Reporting a Natural Gas Leak
Call IGU immediately (907) 452-7111
If you suspect a natural gas leak, evacuate the area immediately and call IGU at (907) 452-7111.
There is no charge for IGU to check a gas leak.
Natural gas is typically odorless; however, mercaptan is added to make it distinguishable from other types of gases if there is a leak. The smell of mercaptan is often compared to rotten eggs or sulfur. If you are smelling these odors and suspect a gas leak:
- Do not go looking for the source of the gas leak
- Do not light a flame, use your phone, start a car, or smoke
You should call IGU at (907) 452-7111.

See

A natural gas leak can be visible. If you see dead vegetation where other foliage is alive, if standing water or a puddle is bubbling, or if gravel is moving, there may be a natural gas leak.
Hear

A natural gas leak can sound like hissing or whistling.
Smell

A natural gas leak can smell like rotten eggs or sulfur. We apply an added odorant to the gas to make a potential leak distinguishable.
