Trailer Maintenance Shop Foreman
Compensation:
$40-$45 hourly
Position Overview:
The Trailer Maintenance Shop Foreman position is a new opening within IGU which will be pivotal in standing up a maintenance program for our fleet of new LNG transport Trailers. The maintenance program will require a drastic overhaul to provide the support needed to run the haul road. The development and implementation of this overhaul will be a primary responsibility of this position. The Trailer Maintenance Shop Foreman will oversee the daily operations of a trailer maintenance and repair facility. This role involves supervising and assisting maintenance technicians, developing maintenance intervals, ensuring the timely and efficient repair of trailers, enforcing safety and compliance standards, and managing the workflow in the shop. The Foreman ensures that all trailers are maintained to meet DOT, OSHA, and company standards for safety, reliability, and performance.
The IGU was formed as a community answer to an energy crisis of high heating costs and poor air quality by building a natural gas utility to bring natural gas to the community at an affordable price. The natural gas utility was established in 2012 and is governed by a seven member Board of Directors.
The IGU’s mission is to provide low cost, clean burning natural gas to the largest number of people throughout the Fairbanks North Star Borough safely, economically, and as quickly as possible. The IGU seeks an individual who will focus on facilitating public and private partnerships and share in the passion and dedication of this community vision.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervision & Leadership:
- Manage, train, and supervise maintenance technicians, ensuring work is completed accurately and on time.
- Assign daily work tasks, prioritize repairs, and monitor progress to maintain an efficient workflow.
Maintenance & Repair Oversight:
- Work alongside maintenance technicians performing repairs.
- Oversee and assist in inspecting, repairing, and modifying trailers, including brakes, tires, suspensions, electrical systems, and structural components.
- Develop preventative maintenance schedules and ensure they are followed to avoid downtime and unexpected failures.
- Conduct and supervise troubleshooting complex mechanical and technical issues with trailers.
- Review work orders and ensure accurate, timely completion of repairs and maintenance tasks.
Quality Control & Compliance:
- Conduct final inspections of trailers after maintenance or repairs to ensure they meet safety and performance standards.
- Ensure all maintenance work is completed in compliance with DOT, OSHA, and other relevant industry regulations.
- Monitor and enforce safety protocols, ensuring that all employees adhere to company and industry safety standards and wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
Inventory & Equipment Management:
- Maintain inventory levels for tools, parts, consumables, and equipment; order supplies to prevent work stoppages.
- Oversee the maintenance of shop equipment, ensuring tools and machinery are in proper working condition.
- Manage relationships with vendors and suppliers for parts and equipment.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Ensure all maintenance records, service logs, and inspection reports are accurately maintained and up-to-date.
- Prepare and submit reports on shop productivity, maintenance costs, and safety compliance.
- Communicate with the Director of Operations about shop performance, staffing needs, and equipment or part requirements.
Training & Development:
- Provide training to technicians on new equipment, technology, and repair techniques.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide feedback to improve team efficiency and quality of work.
Customer Service & Communication:
- Coordinate with trucking contractors and production/storage facilities to ensure timely repairs and to minimize delivery downtime.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certifications in diesel technology, heavy equipment maintenance, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in trailer maintenance, repair, or a related field.
- Prior supervisory or foreman experience in a shop environment is preferred.
- Experience in trucking/maintenance work on Dalton Highway is preferred.
Skills & Knowledge:
- Strong knowledge of trailer systems, including brakes, suspension, electrical systems, hydraulics, and trailer-specific mechanical components.
- Thorough understanding of DOT regulations, safety standards, and compliance requirements for commercial vehicles.
- Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex trailer mechanical and electrical issues.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills with the ability to manage a team effectively.
- Proficient in using maintenance management software and computer systems for scheduling and record-keeping.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Requirements and Hazards:
- The employee must frequently stand, walk, and climb stairs or ladders.
- Regularly required to use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work in outdoor weather conditions, including extreme cold and occasional exposure to hazardous materials.
